The practical distinction

A fluent answer is not evidence that a fact is current. “Current” is a task requirement with a date, source authority, and acceptable age. It cannot be established by a model’s confidence or by finding any recently indexed page.

Worked example

A market brief marked “current as of 26 July 2026” records when each price, product feature, and policy was observed. A source outside the stated freshness window is either excluded or explicitly labeled historical.

Apply it

Record observation dates and verify claims against authoritative sources.

  1. Set the observation date and a freshness window for each material fact type.
  2. Prefer direct authoritative sources and record publication, effective, and observation dates separately.
  3. Recheck volatile facts at the decision point rather than reusing an old generated summary.

Evidence to collect

  • Place a current and deliberately superseded source in the test corpus.
  • Verify that the workflow identifies the applicable version and exposes date uncertainty.
  • Reject a citation that is recent but does not support the attributed claim.

Common mistake

Equating search-result recency, page modification dates, or a model’s phrase “as of today” with verified freshness.
